We are pleased to announce that Aung San Suu Kyi will be joining the Rotary Global Peace Forum as the keynote speaker on Saturday, January 26. The keynote session will begin at 6:00 p.m. If you are not registered to attend, you may purchase a stand-alone ticket for this session.
Biography
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is a Member of Parliament of the Union of Burma. As a founding member of the National League for Democracy in 1988, she served as General Secretary of the party through 2011. The following year, she was elected Chairperson as the party re-registered.
Daw Suu holds a Master’s degree from Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi, India, and pursued graduate studies at St. Hugh’s College, Oxford University and the London School of Oriental and African Studies in the United Kingdom.
Early in her career, Daw Suu worked in the office of the United Nations Secretariat in New York and was a Visiting Scholar at the Centre for South East Asian Studies at Kyoto University and the Indian Institute for Advanced Studies in Simla.
Following her return to Burma in 1988 and winning the election by popular vote, she was placed under house arrest until 1995, and again during 2000 to 2002 and 2003 to 2010.
